My Images Were Sold!

<b>I'm very excited to share with you something that happened recently.</b> I was contacted by a friend of mine, who told me that the <a href="http://www.unep.org/" target="_blank">United Nations Environment Programme</a> was working together with the <a href="http://www.feasee.org/" target="_blank">Forestry and Environmental Action</a> to create a charity sale of photographs, where all the proceeds would go into the reconstruction of a kindergarden in the city of Maglaj in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was recently destroyed by the <a href="http://www.mersad-photography.blogspot.com/2014/05/the-floods-in-bosnia.html" target="_blank">floods in Bosnia</a>.</div>

The sale was held in the Austrian Embassy in Sarajevo on June 5th. I was not able to attend but I was sent some images from the sale, to show to you here. I was also told that my images were the first to be sold. :)</div>

I was glad to be able to participate in this charity sale, and gladly gave my images to be sold. I don't really sell my images, mostly because photography is a hobby of mine and not my source of income, but it was nice to be able to help and I hope that the proceeds raised on this day helped the reconstruction of the kindergarden.</div>

We also made a trip to the Solaris Beach and Wellness Spa Resort. There are a lot of great Canon 6D images from this place, that I'm dying to show to you all!</div>

Gear vs. Craft: What makes a good Photographer?

Looking back now, I didn't even have a good camera with the standards back then, much less nowadays. But still I was as happy as could be, that I had moved on from my film camera. I took that point and shoot everywhere with me. No holiday, no vacation was safe from me and my clicking. And why should it be? <b>A point and shoot is as simple as it gets</b>. You can take it anywhere, it doesn't take up much space and you can get good results. I got it back in 2010 and used it for the next three years (and it's <a href="http://www.mersad-photography.blogspot.ba/2015/03/arabian-dreams-part-13-visiting-abu.html" target="_blank"><u>used even today by my sister</u></a> when she travels without me). That was a revelation. I had arrived into the big league. Or so I thought. Jumping from a point and shoot to a dslr is no easy thing. I was happy with the Automatic setting on the dslr for a long time. It wasn't until 2011 when I finally bought some <a href="http://www.mersad-photography.blogspot.ba/p/photogrphay-literature.html" target="_blank"><u>good photo literature</u></a>, that <b>I started exploring Manual mode or those funny Av and Tv letters on my dial</b>. Yet, with all of those advances in gear my style didn't really change. I basically had the same type of photos on my computer. After discovering the RAW file format, things changes quickly. After editing and polishing those simple images I wanted to learn more. Like with all things that are interesting to us, once you get to the limit of a thing that interests you, you move on to the next one...<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja5MncaFJxYPoHDLnBYPRc3lIe7zBWLprLL0E2l2zdQgDjTsRHlWOz8jj0DfsWwWTJ5Os33nrCFxYQOs2sjiMOJ2HX9u1MmrwTdDtjrc9dLJwLnfzw3mWTfQ9BHrZ-Ui2m9Z35Oh59I-Q/s1600/IMG_09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja5MncaFJxYPoHDLnBYPRc3lIe7zBWLprLL0E2l2zdQgDjTsRHlWOz8jj0DfsWwWTJ5Os33nrCFxYQOs2sjiMOJ2HX9u1MmrwTdDtjrc9dLJwLnfzw3mWTfQ9BHrZ-Ui2m9Z35Oh59I-Q/s640/IMG_09.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><h2 style="text-align: left;"><b>Entering the "professional" sphere </b></h2>It was back in 2013, during our visit to Budapest, when I got the <b>Canon 6D</b>. It is full frame, it is professional, it is great, yes, yes, yes...but with that also comes higher costs for additional gear, <a href="http://www.mersad-photography.blogspot.ba/2015/07/photo-lens-review-canon-ef-24-105mm-IS-USM-f4-on-canon6d.html" target="_blank"><u>like lenses</u></a> and other accessories. Everything comes with a price. I discovered <a href="http://mersad-photography.blogspot.ba/2014/07/going-to-sleep-new-timelapse-vide.html" target="_blank"><u>timelapse photography</u></a>, <a href="http://mersad-photography.blogspot.com/2013/11/budapest-travel-video-video-inside.html" target="_blank"><u>dslr video</u></a>, and many other things. <b>So the conclusion would be that better gear made me a better photographer. But that isn't the case. </b>It's the drive to better yourself that makes you good. You simply play in the price range that you have to. But this doesn't mean you are limited.<br /><br />Here is an example. This next photo was taken with my old iPhone 3GS. Caveman technology when compared to today's phone cameras. <b>But still, I love this photo. I love the warmth, love the feeling I get when looking at it, I love the place it depicts. It transfers emotions, it brings out feelings.</b> That's what counts. Could I have taken a better image with the Canon 6D. Yes. Would be regarded as a better photo. Yes. Is it a better photo. I typically shy away from telling and not because I think I'm high and mighty, but simply because to me it doesn't matter. </b>Of course I do tell everybody, but I also tell them, don't expect to take the same kind of photos just because you got a good camera. Excellence (and to be very clear, I don't consider myself to be great or professional at all!) comes with experience, and they can never exist without each other.<br /><br />Even with my point and shoot back in 2005, ten years ago I was a happy camper. I cherish those images today and think they are good. Here is one from the archives. In the end my points are:<br /><br /><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b><span style="color: #0b5394; font-size: large;">Good gear can get you better shots, but it doesn't make you a good photographer </span></b></li><b><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #0b5394;"></span></span></b><li><b><span style="color: #0b5394; font-size: large;">If you are inexperienced or are just starting out, get inexpensive gear</span></b></li><b><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #0b5394;"></span></span></b><li><b><span style="color: #0b5394; font-size: large;">As you are advancing your photography invest in better gear</span></b></li><b><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #0b5394;"></span></span></b><li><b><span style="color: #0b5394; font-size: large;">Better yourself by reading, learning and simply doing.</span></b></li><b><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #0b5394;"></span></span></b><li><b><span style="color: #0b5394; font-size: large;">Go out and shoot! I don't think there is one tried and true method of getting rid of your fear, maybe the best thing is to fly regularly. Then again, not everyone is traveling the globe continuously, and can be in planes full time. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>I find that no matter how hard I try, the fear somehow creeps back up in between two travels with the plane and the anxiety is right back there, where I left it: at the entrance to the plane.</b> So it goes in circles a bit for me. Get Yourself a good seat</span></h2><b>Another part of the fear of flying (besides the psychological) is the physical one that comes from turbulence and other various aspects of the tilt and shift nature of the plane.</b> Generelly the front of the plane as well as the wings are the most stable part, and it's good to get a seat there. But in order <b>to get the seat you want</b> <b>you usually have to book earlier</b>, which is a good idea for flights anyway. Remember smaller planes tend to have stronger turbulence then big Jumbo jets, simply because of the size. Entertain Yourself</span></h2><b>This is a crucial one for me. Especially on longer flights I have to make sure I have a varied entertainment system set up for me.</b> I put lots of TV shows (better then movies I think, because they are shorter usually and you can watch more and change it up) on my iPad and make sure I have a nice selection. Something that will make me laugh is usually the best option. Good headphones are a must. Then there is music and magazines and books. They go together well. If you are not traveling alone, then spark a conversation with your co travelers, and before you know it you are back on the ground!<br /><br /><h2 style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #ff3773;">3. Finish up Tasks</span></h2><b>Another thing you might try to do is finish up tasks and projects. </b>Put your phone on Airplane mode and organize those contacts, or bring a laptop with you in order to write blog posts (or something else). There are always these little obligations we carry around that we usually never finish up. If all fails, read your travel guide to the place your going to, check schedules and plans for your trip. Know whats Happening</span></h2><b>I like to get myself familiar with the sounds and happening of the plane. Once you are accustomed to them the fear slides away.</b> As humans we fear what we don't know. So don't be shy to go to YouTube and type in "Airplane take off/landing" or something like that and Google the procedure of airplane take off/landing to simply know what's going on. It's a routine for the crew and once you get behind it you will feel like part of them and not a clueless bystander.<br /><br /><h2 style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #ff3773;">5. Think about the Destination</span></h2><b>I already touched upon this idea in tip number 3, but thinking about the destination can really help when you have a fear of flying.</b> Think about the sights you are going to see, things you will experience and just how much enjoyment is upon you. It can really lessen the fear. Don't let the fear impact your love of travel, otherwise you will never see the world. My new Lens in Review: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens

As we arrived in the city, the sun had already began to set, which gave me perfect light for my photos. </b>The lens has a wide range of 24mm to 105mm, and with my full frame Canon 6D, this gives me a good wide angle at 24mm. The shot of the church above was taken at 24mm. There is some vignetting in the raw image, but it took care of it in post. No matter if you have sunlight, or (as it was the case here) have to take the photo in the shade. This time at night. <b>As you can see the lens in combination with the Canon 6D camera, produces excellent images. </b>And with the Camera Raw program of Adobe Photoshop you can reduce the (somewhat present) noise even lower.<b> I think this is a great example of the quality of this lens at wider angles</b>. You just have to know how to frame the shots, since a wider angle distorts the surroundings. Set on automatic mode the lens focuses on the desired subjects really really fast. <b>It just happens so fast, that focusing becomes a thing you don't really think about anymore, but something you just do</b>. Two birds on a electrical wire. <b>The lens focuses on the narrow line of the wire and the birds immediately!</b> No need for manual focusing <i>(which is also there, of course, if you need it)</i>. This means you can capture your subject faster and in the moment. In the image below, I purposefully upped the ISO to 200 on the image even though I had barely any light left. The image stabilizer button on the lens is turned on at this point. I take the shot. Lenses without a stabilizer will produce a blurry image. The lens is heavy but not too much (weight is 700 grams), and has two rings on it: one for zooming, the other for focusing, both are very sturdy and feel great when you turn them. <b>The lens comes with a lens cap (Canon EW-83H) and a lens bag in the package</b>. Some call it a kit lens, because it is usually sold with the Canon 6D or Canon 5D Mark III in a package, but this wording makes it seem of less importance. Believe me, there is nothing shabby about this lens.
